Overview
Napa Firewise is a content-heavy, community-focused nonprofit with a vast amount of critical information to share. The challenge of this project stemmed from the need to organize and present content in a way that didn’t overwhelm users. With resources covering wildfire preparedness, home hardening, local initiatives, and organizational efforts, the existing structure made it difficult for visitors to quickly find what they needed. The goal was to transform a dense collection of information into a site that felt approachable, navigable and useful.
A major focus of the redesign was the design of the content itself. Long blocks of text were broken into scannable sections using clear hierarchy, spacing and guided “steps” to illustrate process. Additionally, content was also presented in modular layouts and incorporated the use of tabbed content to guide users through complex topics. Custom, reusable design patterns were crafted to ensure information is presented consistently across the site, to help users digest information quickly while avoiding the dreaded “walls of text” layout.
These reusable patterns also serve NCFF in the long term. As new content is added, it remains cohesive, consumable and on brand without requiring constant design oversight. Combined with a reorganized navigation and improved information architecture, the final WordPress site makes it easy for users to find critical resources while also highlighting Napa Firewise’s programs, partnerships and ongoing community impact.
