Au Revoir, America!

I’m moving to FRANCE!

Yes, seriously!

For those of you who may not know, Dave has been accepted into a Euro Master’s program for Viticulture and Winemaking that will start in Montpellier, France. It’s a pretty prestigious thing, as they only take a handful of students from all over the world and he was one is them. He applied a while back, just to see what might happen, but I knew he’d get in. He’s a Smarty-Pants McGee, my Dave. We found out earlier this summer that he had indeed been accepted and thus began my heart palpitations at the thought of him being gone for 2 years. (Well, two semesters in France, then a final thesis semester somewhere–could be France, could be Italy, could be somewhere else…we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.) We mapped out all of our options and decided to only do long distance if we absolutely had to. We don’t, so we’re not!

Hooray!

We won’t leave California until mid-August (my last day of work is August 17), at which point we’re thinking of driving out to his parents in Long Island to spend some time there before we depart to France sometime around Labor Day weekend. We’ll be home for the holidays, as the program is still school and observes such things as Christmas and Spring Break. I have NO idea how to speak French but I have a google app on my phone and so far I know how to say “cats make me sneeze” (les chats me font éternuer) which I’m hoping will come in handy when we’re apartment hunting.

I’m so excited for my new adventure and even more excited to experience a year in France with Dave! I hope he likes me in a beret because I’m wearing one every chance I get.

  1. This is so exciting! I loved France, the few days I was there! Everyone speaks English. I’m going to be completely honest when I say, I think they kinda-sorta love Americans, but will never admit it.

  2. No way!! How awesome!! Will you be blogging so we can follow all your French adventures? And you should definitely wear a beret every chance you get- and maybe even a black and white striped shirt, too. When in France….that’s what I always say. You should sign up to be on House Hunters International. They follow students moving to Europe all the time! One last thing….it was confirmed by my boss that the Edge was at Backroom Wines on Sunday and her fiance gave him directions to Brown’s Valley Market because he was looking to get good meat for his camping trip! Best of luck to you on your big move! I’ll have to get all your non-tourist travel recommendations for when I finally get to go on that European vacay I’ve been dreaming about.

  3. Sounds like the beginning of a great adventure – best wishes!

  6. I love it! I’m thinking since Dave will be in school and all, you might need some company…maybe Amanda and I come out for a Girls Trip? You supply the fresh baguettes and macarons and we will BYOB (bring your own beret, obvs). So excited for you!

  7. Awesome Colleen!! Sounds like an amazing time and especially being able to spend it with someone you care about! Now, that just means I need to connect with you in Napa before you leave! (I have a few shipments out there anyways, so now I just need to kidnap you for lunch too!)

  8. Oooh la laaa!! Jim & I will start practicing our obnoxious tourist phrasebook knowledge so we can invite ourselves to stop by your charming country villa!! (Everyone in France has one, right??) 🙂

  9. Congrats, Dave – make sure you remember your Uncle Andy if we come to visit! And if I were you, I’d learn to love the beret…
