Essentials for Boosting Functionality, Security, and Performance
Plugins are what make WordPress so flexible, but they can also be the reason your site runs slowly, breaks during updates, or becomes a target for security issues. That’s why I keep my list of “must-use” plugins short and very intentional. The key is choosing the right ones– tools that don’t just “add features” to your website, but protect it, improve the way the site works, and serve your visitors.
In this post, I’m sharing three essential plugins I install on every WordPress site I build, along with three paid plugins that are worth the spend. These tools will help you maintain security, load your site faster, and make the site easier to manage long-term.

1. Wordfence

Wordfence is my go-to security plugin for protecting WordPress sites from malicious activity. With its built-in firewall, malware scanner, and login monitoring, it offers solid, real-time defense without needing extra configuration. Key features include:

Wordfence also gives you helpful visibility into attempted attacks and potential vulnerabilities. There is a premium version available, but in most cases, the free version covers everything you need.
2. Google Site Kit

Integrating via a plugin like Site Kit ensures that tracking remains consistent, even if you change or update your theme files. With Google Site Kit, you can easily setup and manage analytics without having to paste any code and streamline the management of Google services.
3. Updraft
Backup and Restore Made Easy
Updraft is a backup solution that ensures your website data is secure and restorable. With automated backups and easy restoration options, Updraft simplifies the backup process. Key features include:
- Scheduled Backups: Set up regular backups of your site.
- One-Click Restore: Easily revert to a previous state if issues arise.
- Cloud Storage Compatibility: Store backups on popular cloud services.
Updraft acts as an insurance policy for your website. Keeping off-site backups is crucial and Updraft’s automated solution provides peace of mind in case of data loss or unforeseen issues (i.e., an update breaks something). A backup plugin that allows for saving data (outside of the hosting provider) is a must-have for any site.

4. WP Rocket
Turbocharge Your Site’s Speed
WP Rocket is a premium caching plugin designed to optimize your website speed and performance. With features like page caching, lazy loading, and database optimization, WP Rocket accelerates your site’s loading time. Key features include:
- Page Caching: Dramatically reduce loading times for visitors.
- Lazy Loading: Load images and scripts only when needed, improving performance.
- File Optimization: Combines and compresses site code efficiently
WP Rocket is an investment in delivering an optimal user experience, positively impacting both user satisfaction and search engine rankings. It’s pretty easy to setup out of the box, but if you’re looking to customize some of the settings, it can feel foreign. Usually though, you can see improvements just by activating the plugin, but do test things like forms and other functionally to make sure something important didn’t get cached or held back from loading when it shouldn’t have.
5. Imagify
Optimize Images Without Sacrificing Quality
Imagify is a premium image optimization plugin that ensures your site’s visuals are both stunning and efficiently delivered. Key features include:
- Automatic Compression: Compress images without manual intervention.
- Lossless Compression Option: Optimize images without sacrificing quality.
- Next-Gen Image Format Support: Serve images in modern WebP or Avif formats for better performance.
Imagify actually does have a free tier, but you’re limited to a max upload size of 2MB per image and a 20MB upload limit per month. That could work if you’re not uploading a lot, but I found that it’s worth my time to spring for the paid plan so I can upload what I want, when I want. With either plan, Imagify not only enhances the visual appeal of your website but also contributes to faster load times and improved SEO.
6. Gravity Forms
Creating Dynamic Forms with Ease
I saved my favorite for last. Gravity Forms is one of my most versatile (and likely most used) plugin for creating and managing forms on WordPress sites. From simple contact forms to complex surveys, Gravity Forms allows you to effortlessly collect and manage data but also build out complex user journeys. Key features include:
- Drag-and-Drop Builder: Create forms intuitively without coding.
- Advanced Field Options: Collect specific data with a variety of field types.
- Conditional Logic: Show or hide fields based on user responses.
From a developer standpoint, I can solve a lot with Gravity Forms. It has proved to be an invaluable tool for many of my clients by enhancing user interaction, gathering valuable information and even saving time and money when used as a foundation for a custom solution.

Every WordPress site has different goals, but a solid foundation of reliable plugins makes a world of difference. These are the tools I trust to keep sites secure, fast, and functioning smoothly. I’m a big believer in writing custom code where it counts, but smart development is about knowing when to build from scratch and when to lean on reliable tools. These plugins do the job securely and efficiently, while striking a balance between saving time and money spent.
